November – Sample New Things. I’m interested in everything! I love to cook, work out, learn about health and nutrition, make jewelry and lampwork, and take classes and read books on a wide variety of topics. This month I plan to pick 4 new things to explore.
I first approached this challenge by making a list of new things I would like to try, and then searched for opportunities in these areas. However, this rapidly started feeling like hard work instead of the fun challenge that I had been anticipating. I took a step back and modified my approach, deciding instead to say “yes” to four opportunities that came my way.
Using this new approach, I decided on the following four new things to explore:
- Cathartic Movement Class – This class was offered at my yoga studio at the beginning of the month. From a friend’s description, it sounded like it would be totally outside my comfort zone. The class would incorporate elements of dance and, even worse, an emphatic verbal component. I know from a few self-defense classes that as soon as someone asks me to yell, I immediately freeze up. This class sounded pretty terrible from the description, but it was highly recommended, so I decided to go for it.
- Enjoy Running a Marathon – I signed up for the 2018 Philadelphia Marathon earlier this fall. This will be my 2nd marathon. My first one was pretty terrible. I panicked half-way through, walked a few miles, was pretty hard on myself for not achieving the time I was looking for, and was in a lot of pain by the end. This time, I want to try to enjoy the Marathon as a victory lap for all of the training I have completed this fall. Regardless of the outcome, my primary goal is to have fun!
- Try Krav Maga – The news stories about attacks on female runners is always in the back of my mind, and I’ve been meaning to brush up on self-defense for a while. The opportunity to take a Krav Maga based self-defense seminar specifically for runners came up, and I immediately signed up.
- Attend a Happy Hour Where I Don’t Know Anyone – I’ve been taking a few coding classes with Girl Develop It, some of which helped me with the skills necessary to set up this blog. I’ve been thinking about going to one of the associated happy hours, but have been hesitant because I don’t know anyone who will be there. This month I decided to sign up anyway, and see what happens.
About the Photo:
You can always see where you have been, but the path ahead is unknown. I’m trying to embrace this by relinquishing a bit of control, and choosing to try four new things that happen to come my way.
